They say dogs are easy to train, but if you’ve ever tried to train yours, it can be hard to believe that statement. It seems like nothing you say he understands, it’s like you don’t exist or it’s hard to get him to pay attention to you. If your dog doesn’t pay attention to you when learning, we’ll give you definitive advice to get your pet’s attention.

Steps to take if your dog is not paying attention

Teaching  a pet orders is a matter of perseverance, patience, affection and, why not say, giving it prizes and rewards. The latter is an important step if we want to attract the animal’s attention, although obviously it is not the only one. Follow these steps and you will see that if your dog has never paid attention to you until today, he will start to do so.

choose a prize

The first thing you need to do is  think about which prize your dog likes best. Some prefer one of those trinkets that are special to them, while others prefer a sausage or some ham.

Some may even be content with kibble or canned food. No one better than you to know what your pet prefers, because they know him very well. Keep in mind that the more he likes the prize, the more he will pay attention to your orders.

let him see the award

Once he’s been following you everywhere and knows you’re hiding something in his hand,  sit on the couch until your pet comes in front of you. Open your hand and let him smell the prize, but don’t let him eat you yet.

Every time he tries to eat you, you’ll have to close your hand again. Your  curiosity  is in progress, as is your desire or your “anxiety”.

the first order

With the prize in hand, you can start teaching the first order. The truth is, right now, whoever has your dog’s attention is the prize, not you. But this can change if you bring the treat or toy close to the animal’s cheek while telling your dog: “look at me!”

When you manage to shift the vision of the prize to your eyes, you must reward it. This will help the animal relate the order to its voice and to a gift.

This won’t be easy and chances are you won’t get it the first time. You will need to  repeat it several times  until you get it. If you persist, your dog will definitely pay attention to you, so practice!

And then?

With the above steps, you have already gained your dog’s attention and respect, as he knows that if he obeys you, he will earn the reward and, also, that if he doesn’t, he will not gain anything that benefits him. We can’t deny that dogs love us with an  unconditional love, but their love for food is even greater. In many of their actions, a visible interest in the reward arises.

However,  the above exercise will have made your dog look at you when you call him and thus listen to what you have to say. Now you can use the same method to teach other commands, such as sitting, lying down, stopping, picking something up, bringing it in or dropping it.

It will also more easily respond to your call on the street or in the park, or to stop barking or growling at anyone who approaches, either a stranger or any of your friends.

To start training a dog,  the essential thing is to start with the previous steps and repeat them until it obeys your first call/request. Your voice should be firm but soft. Remember that you won’t get anything from screaming, but with love and  positive reinforcement,  your teaching will always be more effective.
