This dog  has its origins in Great Britain  and apparently there is a very similar breed with which they are always confused: the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. Both breeds are descended from the dogs the Vikings brought to Wales in the 9th century.

It is considered the oldest breed in the UK, although there are other theories as to the year these dogs were brought into the country. However, the most accepted is the one we talked about.

When he arrived in Wales,  his development took place in Pembrokeshire. This animal was used as a herding dog. This might seem strange to us because when we think of a herding dog, a large animal usually comes to mind. This is certainly not the Welsh Corgi Pembroke. However, he was highly valued for his work as a sheepdog.

Until the 1930s, the Welsh Corgi Pembroke and the Cardigan mingled with complete freedom. It was like that until, in 1934, the breeders decided that both races should be different. Therefore, it was necessary to mark the differences between them. That same year, the two were recognized.

General features

Size

It is small, with short legs, but strong and robust. He measures between 6 and 35 cm in height and  usually weighs between 10 and 25 kilos, which can be a lot for a dog his size.

Appearance

Its small paws and pointy ears are the first thing that attracts attention when we look at this very peculiar little dog. His ears are disproportionate to the size of his body, but they make him look very nice.

Its head has a long snout and large ears, looking very similar to a fox.

Your eyes are of medium size. They are also generally dark, although blue eyes are acceptable in those with a bluish black color.

Regarding the tail, it is very short or even non-existent at times. This is the big difference that helps to distinguish whether we are facing a Welsh Corgi Pembroke or a Cardigan, as the latter has a long, furry tail, similar to that of a fox.

Its fur is straight but stiff, of short or medium length. Any color is possible, but white never predominates.

Personality

Despite its sweet and calm appearance, it is an extremely active and very intelligent dog. He is loyal, loving and perfect for being with children. He has a lot of patience, something ideal with the little ones indoors. It will allow children to play anything with it.

He’s very hardworking, and that’s why he was used to shepherding. It is ideal as a pet due to its affectionate and sociable nature.

It does not usually bark, which makes it the ideal pet to live in areas where there are neighbors. Although, on a farm, he also carries out his duties as a guardian and shepherd.

Special cares

Although his size is small, he is extremely active, so he needs exercise. By raising it as a pet in small homes, this activity can be reduced. However,  if you don’t limit the diet and build exercise into the routine, the animal tends to become obese.  A problem that can cause various illnesses.

Your fur should be brushed frequently. It doesn’t require any complicated care, but it is necessary to remove the fallen hair.

Regarding health, over time, they often suffer from hip dysplasia, cataract, retinal dysplasia or von Willebrand disease.

The Welsh Corgi Pembroke is the ideal pet, whether you live in the country or the city. A very intelligent and affectionate dog that will fill your days with joy and love. Could this be your next pet?
