JFK Airport Creates A Pet Terminal

JFK airport creates a terminal for animals

Some time ago, the JFK airport  in New York (United States) announced that it will open a luxury terminal for dogs. This area of the air terminal will take care of the more than 70,000 animals that transit this area each year.

For example, horses and cows will have climate-controlled stalls, dogs will be able to rest in suites with TVs. It will also have a special place for penguins, which will allow them to mate with greater privacy.

Following this article, we will know a little more about this terminal d JFK.

The terminal will be called “The Ark” and its name was inspired by the biblical figure of Noah.  It will be the first air terminal for animals in the world.

With an approximate investment of 48 million dollars and with an extension of 16,500 square meters,  this space will be used for pets and different types of animals.

It will be a reception and quarantine center and will house all types of animals, from dogs and cats to sloths and anteaters.

Many animals that arrive in the United States are quarantined for a period of time (for example, horses, typically for three days) to ensure that they do not have any contagious diseases.

In this sense, “ A Arca” was designed to make the stay as pleasant as possible, with stalls with hay, with capacity for 70 horses and 180 heads of cattle, an aviary and corrals for goats, pigs and sheep.

For dogs, “A Arca” will offer a luxury complex of 1,860 m², with bone-shaped pools, massage service, “ pawdicure” (a mix between “paw”, which is claw or paw, in English, and pedicure ) and even painted nails.

Dogs will also be able to watch flat-screen TV and their owners will be able to follow their movements through a webcam.

Cats will have their own trees to climb.  Also, all animals will have access to a 24-hour clinic, which will be handled by Cornell University.

Even animals that don’t need to be quarantined (for example, a huge dog that can’t get into a cabin and has to travel as cargo) can spend time there, until their owners pick them up.

“A Arca” will be built in an old cargo terminal that was demolished. The project is under the responsibility of Madison Avenue Racebrook, which signed a 32-year lease.

Once the project is completed, its approval will be subject to the US Department of Agriculture. Animals that stay at this terminal must pay a tax determined on the basis of the services.

Dog suites, for example, can exceed $100 a night.

The transport of animals by air is not intended for owners with less purchasing power. A flight to London, for a dog, could cost around $1,000, plus the carrying case, airport taxes and veterinarian certifications.

Airlifting a horse, for example, can exceed $10,000.

The project developers have a number of challenges to face, as there are no similar ideas. For example, among these challenges is that of developing a system for disposing of animal waste.

“A Arca” will be a paradise for many animals that previously needed to spend several hours of stress. Horses are some of them. Currently, they have to be taken to a quarantine center in Newburgh, 130 km north of JFK airport.

In the future, with the new terminal, horses will be able to be quarantined at this location without having to be transported to another location.

Undoubtedly, this possibility is very reassuring for owners, as this eliminates the trip and the risk of injuries that competitors often suffer from riding a stressed horse.
