Champi, The Nurse Dog

Champi the nurse dog

His name is Champi and he likes being a nurse. The downside is he’s a dog. When he realized that he was being taken to his owner, an 89-year-old man, to the Rainha Sofia hospital in Murcia, he decided to accompany his old protector to the hospital, where, as was logical to think, he was not allowed to enter. .

Guard at the hospital door of the nurse dog

However, the animal did not go away, and wanted to stand guard at the door and wait for its owner to be discharged. It has been there, almost without moving, for two days and two nights, in front of the astonishment of passers-by and health personnel, it would have stood firm if the municipal kennel employees hadn’t warned the owner’s children to take him home. his apartment, near the hospital.

His name, Champi, is short for “Champion”. As far as her breed is concerned, she is a cross between a German shepherd and a stray. Even though his last action at the hospital door was excessive, the truth is, it’s the first time he’s done it. Also a few months ago, because its owner had kidney stones, he spent some time at the center’s door. Now he repeated the same behavior.

The animal won everyone’s sympathy, and it did not lack water, food and affection during all the time it was on guard duty in the street. It has been two years since he was adopted as a therapy for the wife of his current owner, an elderly woman who was in the terminal phase of an illness she had contracted. As we can see, the vocation of a nurse has accompanied Champi for a long time.

Social support for the nurse dog

The municipal kennel doesn’t want Champi to stay outside the hospital, but since he became famous, many people have come to the place to meet this little dog and give him food and affection. However, Champi is not an abandoned animal and Sergio, his owner’s son, would sometimes go down to the street to check on the pet and so that it would not lack any food.

There was so much uproar caused by people approaching to take a photo with Champi, that technicians from the municipal kennel went to the hospital door and announced that the animal could not stay there or, otherwise, they would have to take it by force.

Reactions started and  many people were against the removal of Champi to the kennel. Sergio had to take him home. Friends of the family assured that the animal “is not used to being alone, as he always went everywhere with them”. Furthermore, they state that “the poor dog does not stop barking because he just wants to wait for his owner in the hospital”.

Internet forums and networks have been filled with comments about Champi’s story, especially since he was forced to leave the hospital door. “How disgusting these people are, the street is free and it’s not an abandoned animal. They should have made an exception and leave the dog in the owner’s room while he recovers,” says Vanesa Marín, while Paqui Sánchez says: “So many dogs wander unowned on the street and don’t pick them up… and the one waiting for their owner bothers these people, how absurd. It would be more useful for them to take care of the abandoned dogs and let poor Champi see their master leave”.

“The dog that waits for its owner at the hospital door bothers them, but it doesn’t bother them the dirty, smelly and uneaten dogs lying around in the streets. I feel the shame of others. ” Ensures on Facebook Mari Trini Rocamora. Amparo Hernández emphasizes that “if I were admitted to the hospital as the owner of Champi and they let my two puppies come up to see me, I think I would recover just by seeing that they need me. Please let this poor animal see its owner, which I guarantee will be very beneficial to both of you.”

“What bothers them is seeing how animals love until the end and are able to wait for someone for years, something human beings lack… that’s why it bothers them, because seeing him there makes them reflect on these unconscious feelings and make them feel bad.”, says Noelia Ortiz. Lorena Jiménez makes the following comment: “A person is obliged to arrest their dog because they wait for their owner at the hospital door (when the animal can even be therapeutic for its owner), but in front of those who abuse, mistreat and abandon their animals, they do nothing… Let’s continue like this, to see who has the most animal behavior”.

Unfortunately, Champi will no longer be able to be reunited with his beloved owner, as the man has already passed away and his story will not have a happy ending. However, his journey will continue with Sergio.
