Why Do Some Dogs Behave Worse When Wearing A Collar?

Why do some dogs behave worse when wearing a collar?

You may have noticed that the behavior of dogs when wearing a collar is not the same as they do in other circumstances. This is because  when a dog is trapped, it can show aggressive behavior towards other dogs or other people. However, the same dog, when released, looks like that angel who fell from heaven. What are the reasons for these changes in behavior?

So, to answer this question you don’t have to think too much. How would you  feel  if you were taken on a leash everywhere?

Your feelings can be very different depending on the situation. It could be that as soon as he leaves the house and you put a leash on him, the puppy feels that you distrust him and that’s why you keep him,  you don’t like him or you don’t want to let him run around and enjoy things like he wants and needs.

The feeling of sadness due to this lack of trust can generate anger, irritation  and make him look for alternatives to get out of this situation of slavery.

Soon comes the time when the animal meets other dogs and bitches that want to get close to it. There is no escape, just a hundred centimeters. If the dog wants to run away from something that displeases him, makes him feel uncomfortable or even makes him afraid, but he has no way of doing that, his reaction will be obvious: he will respond aggressively  to defend himself.

That’s why when they walk off a leash, their attitude is totally different. If they don’t like something, if they feel scared or uncomfortable, they can run away. Also, when they are on the loose, they feel happier, they run, jump, jump and their mood is more receptive towards other dogs or people.

What can you do?

Unfortunately, laws and our own responsibility require us, on many occasions, to take our dogs on a leash. Even when we find some place where we can release him so he can run, most of the time we have to get him there trapped. If your dog behaves strangely or aggressively when he’s trapped, you can do a few things.

  • Anticipate yourself. If you notice that, normally, when your dog is tied up he tends to fight with other dogs or people, be quick. You must always be aware of everything that happens around you. If a dog comes towards you, don’t let it reach your pet. Pick him up quickly so you can avoid the dispute. If anyone wants to approach or pet you, tell them not to.
  • Don’t fight with the animal. Just having to go out on a leash must be torture for him. So, don’t make the animal’s life even more difficult, as it will be quite tense and may end up reacting in a way you didn’t expect. The best thing to do is not to let him see your “goal”.
  • Promote socialization. Without a doubt, this will be the best way to keep your dog from misbehaving when wearing a collar. However, it will be more difficult, as he will need time and patience to achieve visible results. Get your dog used to letting people pet him, playing with other animals and relating to other pets.

We know you don’t like to have your dog on a leash, but sometimes there are no other options. Try to make this experience as less painful as possible, both for him and for you,  and above all, take advantage of the moments when he can be free to let him play with other animals and other people. Thus, he will begin to forget the fears that plague him and motivate him to flee when he is trapped.

If you prefer, use an extendable collar  but only if he’s not a very large dog. But you always have to have it under control and you can’t let it run to the fullest extent of the collar, otherwise it could hurt your neck.

As we always say here,  animals respond to love, perseverance and patience. No matter what you want to teach your pet, if you put these tips into practice, you will be guaranteed success.
